We spent a chunk of time exploring Nice, Antibes, and the small hillside villages along the route to Monaco, and we used the various Corniches for day trips. We used Villafranche-sur-Mer as our base. The old town is colorful and walkable.
All our meals were delicious and the bakeries sublime. If Brasserie du Col (90 Cor André de Joly, Nice) is still there, the pastries were tremendous, but their fresh tuna sandwich became a daily addiction. Bandit would approve. I believe there is a weekly outdoor produce market with gorgeous fresh spices by the main beach.
+ The Picasso museum in Antibes was an unexpected and intimate delight.
+ Éze is a beautiful cliff town with a lovely chapel. Worth a stop.
+ We saw Cap-Ferrat from the car because we decided we were too underdressed to pop into the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat for a glass of wine. We should have been brave because the gardens were supposed to be beautiful.
RE; cooking question-- I recently tried making stir-fried eggplant, but was also too lazy to go to the specialty asian supermarket to buy wok oil... so I used olive oil instead... dear god that was some HEAVY eggplant. Veritably*waterlogged* with olive oil. Won't be making that mistake again.
We just returned from a Nice and area anniversary trip in May. We loved the Matisse museum, and spent the day at Renoir's house in Cagnes-sur_Mer (the walk to the castle in Cagnes-sur-Mer was a highlight as well). The greatest breakfast was jambon au buerre. One tip: no one seems to bother with the SNCF app for train tickets (it is super annoying) - just get paper tickets from the machines at the stations. Enjoy every moment!
my favorite thing in Nice, that I think about all the time, was the tram that beautiful art and seasonal soundscapes at the different stations! this feels like a very Phil thing.
For Nice, FR (spent a a month there a few years ago)!:
- Café des Amis - good post-beach vibe, both for cheap drinks and good food
- Kalōs - Greek spot, yum!
- if you want to do a hike (dependent on the heat….), the Colline de Château is quite easy to go up and the view of Nice is great
- kind of random but you can take a bus along the coast to diff seaside towns. Cap de Ferrat is a great beach, Grasse is cool if you want to see the village & are into perfume. I do like the Fragonard brand …..
I spent a month in Nice 30 years ago and loved it (but alas that does limit my ability to provide any practical recommendations). The vibes will be immaculate I’m sure.

This is frequently something I'm goofing with eggplant. It's a tricky veg sometimes!
