I would like to propose 2 quotations here, both of which I consider appropriate because they are from movies I have never seen but trailers I have seen MANY times and quote relentlessly in spite of having no real plans to ever see the full movies:
“This is our cop car!” from Cop Car (2015)
“Sometimes it is so hard being Dalí.” from Dalíland (2023)
a non-wiki biopic for your consideration: Love & Mercy (Bill Pohlad).
a movie I deeply love, and can never really get a handle on what the consensus is about it (or if there is one?). the Pet Sounds sessions are transcendent
Great stuff Fran!!! "It's all happening" is def the best read in pre roll.. i go to Regal about 3 times a week so will miss it and hope it is replaced. My pitch if they do a new one in honor of the great auteur BCoops :
Thank you for this in memoriam for the regal pre-roll. I always thought the “this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” guy had a star quality that would be perfect for Apple TV+.
here is a question I have been wanting to ask someone knowledgeable: do people still like Steve Carell? he's gotten so much work this last decade but none of it seems to really register with people
The regal rollercoaster scene gave me strong flashbacks to my first job working at a regal cinema in high school. Also on the biopic front, would recommend, if you haven't seen, Wild Nights with Emily. It's based on academic research about Emily Dicksinson probably definitely being a lesbian.
Love the discussion on biopics! I think the thing that makes a biopic actually enjoyable (at least when the subject is an artist) for me is when the form/style of the film is actually informed by and in dialogue with the artist’s work, if that makes sense? I haven’t seen Benediction, but really enjoyed Davies’ A Quiet Place & Alan Rudolph’s Mrs. Parker & the Vicious Circle is one of my underrated favorites! And I guess Amadeus is a no-brainer for me as well. But those films feel like the work of the subject permeates the whole of the film rather than just hitting every bullet point in the wiki page as the most dull ones do.
Arlington Theatre...indeed I do know. Also, my closest friend in Albany (where Regal is the only theater chain), at a loss for how to decorate the very sweet handwritten card she gave me when I moved, simply wrote all the quotes from this commercial on the front of the card because she “wanted to do something that would make me laugh.” I am was already going to frame it but, I’m definitely going to now.
Any thoughts on the "you wouldn't steal a car" commercials? I'm 90% sure they played it in theaters but there's a possibility it was just on DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. Is this the GOAT pre-movie public service announcement?
Realized that the pre-roll was gone because I took a 4-year-old who I babysit to see Elemental this weekend and as the trailers were wrapping up he asked “Is the movie starting?” and I very confidently said “There’s one more commercial” but then there wasn’t. I was happy to be wrong but it’s too late and all of these line deliveries are burned into my brain forever.
I also hate the Nicole Kidman ad and the ironic(?) meme culture around it but as a Regal Unlimited subscriber it did feel like I was in no position to criticize because the one we got was so much worse.
Fran Fran Fran! I do feel like I experienced the Regal ad in the best possible way: via Fran Magazine. American Hustle was pretty bad but “We gotta get over on all these guys.” remains a great line. And even the thought of Bradley Cooper, aghast in hair curlers, is enough to make me laugh. Of course none of this is worth David O. Russell making Amy Adams cry on set. With all this (Regal) being said, I wish you and I could see a movie at AMC together. Bottoms perhaps (I eagerly await your review). I’m proud to say that not only have I seen Birth (thank you Hunter Harris), or put my hand lovingly over my heart during “We come to this place” but I actually think fondly of many Nicole moments during the ad. I think of the opera scene from Birth as well as Keith Urban accidentally including Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham making out in the back of his TikTok, recorded at the Eras tour. That’s culture. And the Nicole Kidman AMC ad feels like home to me.
If you are ever in NJ! (I say this as a joke, knowing that you lived in NJ for many years.) My friend lives in Jersey City and we meet in the middle (Menlo Park Mall) for our movie club. The offer always stands!
My 'Memoria Sound' is the last popcorn pop (explosion) from the Regal Rollercoaster Intro
okay-- NOW WE'RE COOKING

Now why do I not even remember Cop Car...
I mean if you told me it was only a trailer for a movie that didn’t exist I would also find that plausible.
30 Rock joke vibes... Phil said it's "kind of solid" though...

you know, I always heard great things about Love & Mercy and never got around to it. shooting up to top of list!!
i think “you don’t want the money?” from michael clayton could fit in nicely
OMG. yes

Danny Trejo walks out of the regal and says "hey"
Regal employee with cool hair "what?"
Trejo "i just want to take another look at ya"
Trejo needs to be inducted into Regal canon, regardless of the future of Regal pre-roll
Thank you for this in memoriam for the regal pre-roll. I always thought the “this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” guy had a star quality that would be perfect for Apple TV+.
I hope he breaks out!!

this is a great question... I am always happy to see him showing up playing against or into type... Foxcatcher good???
Foxcatcher almost a decade old :/

I need to catch it!
You should do the other ranking of this ad that me and frank do...
the hottest is the best: it's all happening girl // the least hot is "you can't sit with us!"
I just know Hey You Guys's slurp game goes crazy
she's up there...

that's a great point!!
The way you slander amc stubs members in this issue is so unkind. I definitely saw Birth!!!!

it might be the gold standard for its enduring memeability but Nicole Kidman is right up there, for better and worse
“Not good in a way that felt profound.”🤣🤣 Holy shit, Fran. You’re pulling no punches and you’re speaking the truth.

And how was Elemental!!!!
Cute enough, if you don’t think too hard about any of the metaphors.

I would gladly go to an AMC with you!
