i think emerald likes "santa brought it early"... can't explain why...something about the manic energy feels like what she's going for but can't ever quite achieve... santa - he brought it early!
Your analysis of Promising Young Woman (and Fennell’s contrasting thoughts about it) is EXACTLY how I feel! Now when people ask me to defend my opinion on the movie, I can simply direct them to Fran Mag.
Your shout out to Emerald in Barbie made me wonder how you ended up on Barbie. I am a new subscriber. Can you point me to the Fran Mag editions I can read from the archive?
There's def no reason for anyone to see Saltburn but knowing we were both on Tumblr in a certain era... there has never been more of a "skins series one gifset" vibe to a movie ever before...
Feel like Fennell loved Shirt Brothers one my least ITYSL skits. I liked Saltburn much less after learning that was a prosthetic not really Barry at the end
I just wouldn’t assess the movie by framing it next to Ripley as the gold standard. Your main criticisms are that it’s boring (which needs unpacking) and there are too many clowns, but the latter is what sets this movie apart from the others you referenced. Perhaps a bit tongue in cheek at times, but it’s laugh-out-loud, raunchy, and disgusting – which made it super fun to watch. Super stylized and well suited for TikTok, yes, but a refreshing take on a psych thriller.
I would just expect a psych thriller to have a bit more urgency... the lackadaisical pace deflated tension. I found this nowhere near a slow burn and often wasting my time as a viewer.
will the Fran Mag sweatshirts perhaps drop in 2024?
Yes. It's happening.
Ferris Bueller is an always mad at my one friend classic

Patti Harrison would run away with an Emerald Fennell movie but let's also keep her out of there

Fran I have been WAITING for your Saltburn review. Bless you!

No archival writing in the mag on Barbie, but I reviewed the film for The Film Stage on its release: https://thefilmstage.com/barbie-review-greta-gerwigs-plastic-fantasy-is-here-for-a-good-time-not-a-long-time/
I think it's quite funny and otherwise a bit muddled!
taskmaster and mike leigh references in the same paragraph? just tag me next time!
(i still will not be viewing saltburn.)

I keep hearing conflicting info on this...
I havent done a ton of research on this one but it is a trend i absolutely hate and blame Euphoria for.
fran mag on taskmaster when
I wrote about it forever ago (2021) for Defector: https://defector.com/watch-taskmaster-and-indulge-in-the-simple-pleasure-of-watching-funny-people-do-weird-things
But maybe it's time to revisit...
I only got into it this year but if you haven't seen most recent season (16), strongly recommend
Loved S14 and S15. Have yet to start S16 but hearing from many that it's great!!!
Fennell definitely loved the Brunch sketch from ITYSL. “No dirt, just wet wet mud!”
FranMag needs a copy editor. No one has ever called Emma Stone "annoying" (because how?). Maybe an errant drag-and-drop.
Writing as an oft-labeled annoying person myself, I am more than capable of calling it like I see it. You don’t have to agree!
True. As an outsider I wouldn't get it ;)
