Oberweis chocolate milk drop has launched me into a Proustian reverie unlikely to soon resolve. Might need to check ticket prices to ORD. And what a funny detail that Mr. O lost all 900 political campaigns he funded via astonishingly good, unambiguously bourgie milk.

I remember that the cool kid job when I was in high school was working at the ice cream shop. I could not for the life of me get a job there. At Jewel Osco, on the other hand, I was welcomed with open arms....!

Your soul is honestly so much better off. Jewel-Osco was (is) all of us.

my parents refused to go to oberweis due to their political candidacies! it really was worth the hype when I first tried it in late high school.

in the greek myth baucis and philemon loved each other so much they asked zeus to transform them into intertwined oak and linden trees when they died which i feel was definitely on this chocolate coconut water copywriter’s mind

Fran, did we drink too much milk growing up? I feel like even by 90s/00s standards we were in like the 90th percentile of milk drinking and the only thing slowing us down was our literal body sizes.

I love trying a new little beveragino. Lately it’s been the severed lime flavor of Liquid Death (for a second I couldn’t remember their name. Skull Water?). When I find a little treat I like, I try to stock up before it goes the way of the Dodo, like Mike’s lemonade (no alcohol in sight) which I loved but was discontinued because someone found bits of ground glass in some bottles (also made of glass).

With all this said Fran, the choco coco looks truly vile, but I commend your spirit of adventure.

Josh Brolin was drinking a Liquid Death when we spoke on Zoom....... your minds

No. Fran no!! Loved his work in Hail! Caesar. He kinda plays the same character in Dune. Just a guy who really loves his job. That said, Diane Lane. Diane Lane forever.

weird piece of trivia: i was describing the bradley cooper baby thing to austin, and mentioned i have not really ever seen a bradley cooper movie, and we ended up watching the hangover in which people… do in fact kind of burst into rooms with guns pointed at a strange baby. i was like, maybe that's why his brain went to that specific scenario lol

I do think the Hangover movies made a really strong impression on him… when I saw Maestro at NYFF, the lyft driver on the way home said he was still holding out hope for Hangover 4 :(

In much the same way I waited to watch Succession til after the finale came and went and was good, I'm excited to watch Maestro this month. A temporal pincer movement of Maestro moments. I like all the Smartless guys individually (LEGO Masters the GOAT) but something about their powers combined...tough to overcome the Hollywood-ness and the Gen X-ness of it all, the Bill Simmons problem.

also Fran I would love to hear you and Leor talk twisted novelty treats. you have an excitement re: weird snacks that I admire and fear.

Yes exactly well put re: the Smartless guys - there's a sort of fearful quality to Jason Bateman imo but in isolation they are all great presences. I didn't know Leor was a novelty treats man; this is major.

oh yeah he goes nuts for a flaming hot cheeto mac n cheese or a hostess cupcake beverage. written a few stories on it too: https://chicagoreader.com/food-drink/sugar-and-snacks-and-everything-nice/

yeah I have been declaring 'its the summer of weird drinks' for weeks now. Made some salted raspberry coconut water ice blocks which were good. I bought some black sesame and barley soymilk from the Thai grocery store last week which was good, but too sweet. The canned matcha bubble tea was bad, and the copy of the African/Brazilian canned coffee was worth the price regardless of the syrupy contents. "Across the Indian and Atlantic ocean/coffee beans are starting to open/ the sun rises and they swirl together/nothing ever has tasted better" that kind of thing. Love a successful new liquid experience!

I am sort of fascinated by the canned bubble teas - I see them at both my local grocery and the Japanese deli by where I teach... it seems too good to be true and is probably gross but they do tempt me every now and then!
