happy to see you at the end of a truly god awful week for me. seth and i did manage to see the looney tunes movie before it got pulled, though! it’s truly classical in its form i enjoyed it immensely, though i was let down by the lack of bugs bunny…seth’s been on a WoW kick, i’m playing death stranding. we’ve also begun a harry potter rewatch (he’s only seen like two of them and that when he was a kid) which is fun and raises a lot of complicated feelings for me. i still know all of their names.
I really feel like I missed out on the Looney Tunes movie but hoping to just watch on Max with an edible and feel some type of way. I have faint hope that the Coyote v Acme sale will happen and we'll get to see that in SOME way or form. Have you played DS before? I never fully beat the game - got bogged down, literally, around the final boss and was just like "nvm, I get it" - but it is a FASCINATING time. I never really "liked" playing but I loved "what it was." Don't get me started on reckoning with Harry Potter.......
i haven’t played death stranding before but it is working extremely well for me. i feel like im on kojima’s absolute weirdo wavelength. it feels camp. i love it. i’m only about 15 hours in tho and just got to the midwest a couple hours ago so we’ll see how i feel once im deeper.
the harry potter thing is so so hard. i am trying to love them again because i want that for me. and there are moments, but it’s just, you know, im a trans nonbinary person and im sitting there and i love the characters so deeply and then over and over it’s like ew that’s a rowling ism ew that’s a rowling ism. i think watching them all will be enough to help me move along a bit. funnily enough, the impulse came from me n seth being on a ralph finnes kick…we watched conclave and then i sat seth down for the english patient (which he loved almost as much as i do) and now im like you know what ELSE he’s in??? we just have to watch three other movies first LOL
Rowling is one of the most unrelenting ghouls in modern culture… it’s really just sad and stupid. I’m convinced the new HBO series is going to be one of the most evil things of all time, especially bc it now carries the baggage of the past decade of her harm. The adults are often really great in those original movies — I saw PoA at a rep screening (lol!) for the first time in many years a while back and was like wow… I love David Thewlis… two great Ralphs: A Bigger Splash and Hurt Locker (the latter is a mid movie but hes really good in it)
also yes the hbo series is simply such an ominous cultural presence…it’s like it’s constantly lurking we know it’s coming and i just want that discourse to never actually materialize
The Day The Earth Blew Up is good! manages to fit several great toon-length setpieces in the runtime while still having cohesive character arcs. and it’s funny! I look forward to watching again at home. Eric Bauza has a handle on both characters. if the leaked plot of Coyote v. acme is to be believed, Bugs is a minimal presence there too; in some ways I respect withholding your number one guy for a few films, like how they’re not gonna put out the Paul McCartney biopic first.
Once the sequel is out I'm tempted to replay. I think now that I have a better handle on it I'd have more fun this second time around. I just never liked the interstitial levels with Mads where it suddenly becomes a shooter game and I got fed up having to do them.
I watched most of Adolescence and was pretty nonplussed by it, maybe with the exception of the third hour, which makes some choices I admired. The second episode had me wondering: is it at all plausible that these detectives charged with investigating the murder of a teen girl would need the term ‘incel’ explained to them for the first time? Is this a period piece? I suppose there’s an argument for the show’s social utility but I may be mostly allergic to its style… not so, luckily, for The Pitt
finished Severance s2. Ben Stiller is so smart he’s stupid, I wanted to noogie him for the choice of final scene/shot. because I’ve been spending a lot of time with a non-cinephile recently I am rewatching a lot of films (Crossing Delancey this week :D) as well as watching more TV than usual, so I find myself reaching for “the hard stuff” when I have the clicker to myself. I think I’m going to keep going on my Peter Watkins kick (La Commune playing Doc next month) and Robert Kramer, whose Milestones had a nice long writeup in the recent NLR
I'm inclined to buy detectives don't know anything outside of, like, Candy Crush but it did feel 2-3 years (at least) behind on modern discourse on the alienated man, though it would make sense to me that actors in Britain maybe only learned about this six months ago on account of their own weird bubble. I really admire how the last two eps sink into the misery of it all - and I think the dour note it ends on makes it worth it. The first ep drove me insane because I didn't care about the cops and was content to see them vanish after the second ep.
I once innocently told my freshman year college roommate’s mom that I liked peeps and she thought that was so funny and charming she sent me like 20 boxes of peeps every year lol
I want to know what a Ritter Sport with Fizzers/Rockets tastes like. British Smarties in popcorn is one of the best movie theater snacks. Even better than M&Ms in popcorn!
Omg thanks for the shout out! It was so cool to meet you! Was not anticipating my baby sister seeing that many penises in one sitting but they’ve gotta grow up sometime. I really enjoyed the movie - I have been watching a lot of single location shot stuff lately and it’s fun to get immersed in a setting like that where you start to learn all the beats of the community that inhabits it. And George did a great job in the Q&A so I can definitely say it was 👍👍 for me!
I had a similarish experience in Chicago with my brother about a decade ago taking him to a showing of since-buried festival movie that was so explicit - we were both fine but I was like wait oops!! It was great to meet you - hope to cross paths again!
on Friday I finished Soderbergh’s The Limey - much like Night Moves, I screwed up by taking a break in the middle of this neo-noir right before tension ratchets up several notches. good flick but not nearly as good as Haywire. rewatched May December Saturday night, laughed a lot more the second time around, one of my absolute favorites of the last five years. Portman’s character is a menace and I wonder if she was inspired by any other actors in particular. my friend Matt screened What’s Up Doc at Music Box Sunday morning for his birthday (a Matt-inee), with a Looney Tunes “Bugs and the Boid” opener. Perfect movie. Oh, to have young Babs lay some hijinx on me…
hoping to knock out Vineland before PTA’s new flick comes out but I need to power thru the last half of Naked Lunch first
also started on album 2 Saturday afternoon recording at my friend’s place and brought home some new moisturizer and baby’s first serum inspired by previous newsletter discussions - good to be protected from the wind on a cold Monday morning
I love the Limey!! Way more than Haywire but I think even pre-Carano scandal I found that performance really tough to latch onto, whereas Terrence Stamp is so <3 to me. I wish Sodey was still putting Luiz Guzman in stuff; it's always great to see him. One of my big Chicago regrets is never doing a bday party at the Music Box... maybe one day!!!
Hell yeah. I went Dex/Int on my first play through. Got locked into Moonveil katana and ended up with 70 Int even though I never cast spells lol
Good luck with Malenia! I think she’s a super fun fight but phase 2 is too much. I only beat her with my Nepheli Loux summon breaking her stance for me
I got Bloodhound's Fang early and just never deviated, though I do have a club for when I need to do some serious bonking. I love phase 1 Malenia but phase 2 I almost always die on impact immediately, and the one time I didn't, I made it, maybe, like, 8 seconds into the fight 😩
Feels important to clarify that British/european smarties are different than American smarties if you didn’t know. They’re basically m& ms.
Did not know this!!! Is there an equivalent British/euro candy that is like that chalky fruity type of thing?
what americans call smarties we call rockets ! (it’s like this in canada too)
I love being a life long learner

i had never heard of a bigger splash but we just googled it and now i know what we’re watching this week LMFAO

I agree that Bugs is Paul - they're both lil stinkers!!!! I can't wait to watch.
would love to hear your thoughts on the finale if you ever go back to beat death stranding fully

Crossing Delancey yay The Pitt starts here SOON
i know someone who unironically likes the peeps cereal, one of the more cursed objects ever committed to a cardboard box
No!!!!!!!!!
I once innocently told my freshman year college roommate’s mom that I liked peeps and she thought that was so funny and charming she sent me like 20 boxes of peeps every year lol
Nightmare 😭
I want to know what a Ritter Sport with Fizzers/Rockets tastes like. British Smarties in popcorn is one of the best movie theater snacks. Even better than M&Ms in popcorn!
Didn't know about British Smarties in popcorn that's genius
We should be a colony again who cares
more like "PTA hits different when you’re in love with your mom"
regular Peeps are really bad, but chocolate-covered Peeps??? still also pretty bad, until you hit like your 6th one, then it's fugue state bliss

I always think of his appearance on Community! "the 90s were great, I was getting laid a lot after Boogie Nights"
highly recommend booking the MB sometime! it's not too pricey and the staff are extremely easy to work with.
Assuming that is your hand in the ritter sport pic (a candybar I've never heard of btw), can we get a manicure reveal?
will publish to notes posthaste
Fran, please, what is your build in Elden Ring?
DEX!!!!! Some strength. I have no spells - I would love to try again and do a magic build but way off in the future…
Hell yeah. I went Dex/Int on my first play through. Got locked into Moonveil katana and ended up with 70 Int even though I never cast spells lol

universal language so good. need to know "what americans think abt it"
Dying to see!!
