I have also never seen an opera in English but I'd probably rush to see a production of Moby-Dick in any form. One of the lines of criticism that sticks in my head is Kenneth Tynan's review of Orson Welles' Moby-Dick play, where he zeroed in on the prosthetic schnozz he wore for he character and called him, a la Hamlet, "a man who could not make up his nose."
I saw the current Steppenwolf production of Fool for Love on Friday, which was my first time seeing Sam Shepard performed and it was basically everything I wanted out of a Shepard production, the most satisfying show I have seen at Steppenwolf. The direction really harnessed the visual sense of Shepard's writing, including the extended bit with a lasso that complements the constant re-arrangement of the actors' bodies into painterly configurations. And it was funny and moody and had that Shepard sense of a self-contained apocalypse that may or may not be really happening. I stood and applauded in full sincerity.
Must regrettably agree that the orca ep of DO did not "serve the house down boots mama". It did leave me with a hospital hankering so I made some more progress on The Pitt at the gym this weekend. The issues I had with it from the jump have not dissipated - the writing is programmatic without the best of ER's predictable unpredictability, the young cast is not all that compelling and seem to have been assigned a maximum of two character traits each - but each hour makes me appreciate more the work that Fiona Dourif is doing. I haven't followed her career much - not a Chucky person - but it's moving to realize that she is a great actor too, and has inherited her dad's face in all its emotional translucence.
I’ve never seen Shepard performed but read thru a bunch of his work in college — a very pleasurable and rewarding few months (long buried Fran Lore is my “theatre studies” minor which I mostly just used to read plays and get a B- in acting). I only ever saw This Is Our Youth at Steppenwolf which had, as anyone might predict, a Tavi problem — though Kieran and especially Michael Cera were good. I later saw Cera in The Waverly Gallery, a worse play but a great performance. Once I saw him in the neighborhood and it’s maybe the most starstruck I’d been.
Im realizing now I forgot to include my Doc Odd critique but I did find its whale science pushing plausibility (that’s the whole show, I know, but…….. what happened with the orcas literally would never ever happen) and more importantly it should have just been one episode. Saving the Pitt for darker days slash getting a cold and didn’t know Fiona was in there but that’s a plus for sure. I only just learned that it has some kind of formal 24-esque gimmick? Which appeals for sure.
seth and i have also seen black bag! black bag rules bc it is like a play but it’s a movie and that’s my favorite kind of movie!! also congrats on maliketh!! i told seth you beat him and seth cheered and then said “congrats on beating the first boss in truly such a nightmarish gauntlet”. you got it fran!!!! elden lord so so soon!!!
I want to see what your Elden Ring character looks like. Also, my enduring memory from playing 2/3 of the game when it first came out is the madlibs style messages they let online players leave in-world ostensibly to hint at tips or help with hidden items. Do those still exist? Mostly I remember ppl pretty immediately discovering they could make it say “try finger but hole” and you’d see that at just about every cave entrance. The indomitable human spirit.
Clare and I watched Black Bag and then Gaga SNL, which made me realize Jost and ScarJo are in a Black Bag situation wherein SNL continually tries to mess with their marriage.
Willful Disregard is such a good book that I also never want to reread ever because the emotional space it depicted was so miserable lol. It was too good!! I'm not going back!!!!
It bummed me out much less than If Only which started fun and then really wore me down with its tediousness. I loved “the girlfriend chorus/choir” in WD so much — will be applying this to my own life moving forward
Fran! Thank you for the lovely review!
You’re the best !!
