As I was waiting for this email, I had the thought “don’t talk to me until I’ve had my Fran Magazine”, which would go well with the funky logo on a coffee mug. 2024 merch??
I'm a very new sub but I am very grateful for the magazine (happy happy birthday!!). I'm reading the Neapolitan Quarter rn for the *first* time and I'm hyped to hear about how your re-read goes.
Thank you! I am too. I brought them all on a vacation and tore through them in about two and a half weeks. The first was the hardest for me to get to - I am indifferent towards the interiority of children?? or: I was in my 20s - and am curious if it'll read quicker/differently this time around. How are you finding them so far? And thank you for subscribing!
actual war crimes notwithstanding he should be tried in the hague for not putting the original fast car on the playlist. & a SUMMER MIX at that?? it’s an autumn song
Yay! So excited for another year of Fran Magazine, and for the rereading reports in particular, as someone whose yearly reading is about 60% re-reads and there's nothing I can do about it!
Also, consider this another vote for Woolf May (the logo could do something with the W/M mirroring maybe?), either Orlando or Jacob's Room would be great.
(Count of) Monte Cristo May!! I have been dying to read this. Anna Karenina. I want to read another really long classic that I'd never read otherwise. Please just don't threaten me with Joyce June i would literally die of happiness
Anna K feels like an option but I am haunted by a grad school prof who told me not to start with that one, and though I've read other Russian lit this does feel like it would be a *re*-start in a way where it might feel too challenging. Phil has also been advocating for Monte Cristo (or OG Musketeers) as a possible read this year too...
Phil would love nothing more than Gormenghast trilogy...
One of my goals this year is to revisits the Woolfs I've read - To The Lighthouse being one of them. I think because it's a reread that knocks it out of the running but maybe a different Woolf?
I'm planning to reread Dalloway for sure, and To The Lighthouse. Maybe a reread of The Waves. I'd like to do Jacob's Room for the first time. Maybe also Orlando?

Noted!! Jacob's Room on the list for this year for sure.
thank you for this heads up about rereading the Neapolitan quartet later this year so I can plan my own reread accordingly

Happy Birthday to Fran Magazine - my second favorite email to get behind the latest vinyl from Turntable Lab.
I'll take it!!!! Thank you!
how’s “to the lighthouse” by virginia woolf sound? or maybe we go crazier with the gormenghast trilogy... mervyn may?
Phil would love nothing more than Gormenghast trilogy...

I’m gonna second (third) Gormenghast because it was already near the top of my TBR for this year, would happily join a readalong
Two votes for Gormenghast with a backing from Phil himself... Mervyn May is real, folks!
Okay... maybe if not the May read... then it will happen this year... too many (three) guys are asking!!!
I’ve been allowing Gormenghast to collect dust for over a year now, so I think I need a Mervyn May in my life this year.
Which Woolf do you have on your reading list? I’ve also planned on reading Orlando this year!

Oh , Jacob’s Room would be great to do too! If a Woolf isn’t the book for May, I’ll read it with you in spirit.
Gormenghast is so busting!!! I know Fran loves “weird guys” and baroque prose so it’s like….. what are we waiting for??????
