on the flip side of this, I am currently accepting applications for a Sensible Girlfriend Who Doesn't Have An Esoteric Boyfriend But Is In The Market For One. Does Substack have DMs?
Underrated is that this is just as good for “esoteric aspirants” who have heard of none of this stuff but who like me are like “hell yeah brother” at every single thing anyway
Good list of things but sadly am realizing everything relevant to Frank has already been recommended to him by Phil. Asked him about the Substack and apparently he reads it all the time?? I’ve never seen this…
when i was in high school i was obsessed with collecting every bootleg LPC tape and minutiae, and i literally haven’t even thought of him for fully 15-20 years until now wow ty phil sincerely!!
okay this is literally such an incredible list-at first i was like “seth has this vibe but is this list REALLY going to be useful?” and then the second thing was one of his most favorite games of all time (he’s so excited for kingdom come deliverance 2). thank u for ur service phil
If he’s already played KCD, he might like the Mount And Blade series (although it’s quite possible he’s already played it) or Chivalry 2, which is like the KCD combat system transported into a MOBA type setting
nate approves the military surplus plug as his favorite lifetime rucksack is german military and he will die on the hill of this being the best bag (we got into a fight about it, hence the dying on hill)
I haven’t read it, but I hear great things about the book “monolithic undertow”
Another good option could be “Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear” by Steve Goodman, AKA Kode9, which explores the relationship between the military industrial complex and sound and music— LRADs, the use of heavy metal in torture, that sort of thing— it’s sort of a synthesis between The Drone Chronicles and what you wanted The Drone Chronicles to be.
Ooh. I've looked at Monolithic Undertow and will probably grab it eventually. Hadn't heard of the other but I'm looking it up now. Reminds me a bit of Geoff Manaugh—deeply my thing.
On the same-ish topic, I'll throw out recommendations for Kate Molleson's Sound Within Sound and Walter Zimmerman's Desert Plants: Conversations with Twenty-Three American Musicians!
possibly annoying, but regardless a nit i feel the need to pick, MLB is referred to as that, not "the MLB" annoyingly unlike the other major american sports associations
I'm honestly shocked that I didn't already have it on my wishlist, and this is probably the only baseball-related grammar mistake I'd actually point out only because it's not quite totally pervasive and I'd actually be annoyed if I made it myself, unlike saying RBIs as the plural form instead of just RBI.
i want the baseball game - can one of you tell me if i would like it
one time jim called military surplus "army merch" so now that's what it is
you should do it. you love to be the boss
the baseball game also really appeals to me, as well as the book about rich american families.
It rocks it made me care about IRL baseball
Fuck a boyfriend, I'm getting Out of the Park Baseball 25 for myself!!

For a second I thought The Drone Chronicles was about, like, La Monte Young and Éliane Radigue. I want that version please.

Well you’re right about it being possibly annoying and you’d love Out Of The Park Baseball 25
