My childhood dog was named Mystic and she was a massive golden retriever and I loved her and the tip of her nose smelled and she burped in my face every time I cried and I literally miss her all the time . Stitch is my favorite creature alive. Stitch is real to me. I loved the stitch cartoon because I wanted to hold all the creatures on it, stitch most of all.
Ben said this below as well, but when the original Lilo came out i was already too old to really enjoy it. I liked the Elvis part though — also there was a whole scene with a plane flying past Honolulu skyscrapers that they had to change due to 9/11, crazy to think about. Also Nani in the original cartoon… definitely left an impression on my 8 year old brain.
Also i don’t know if you remember this Clare, but when Lilo and Stitch came out the Disney Parks had an Ad campaign based on Stitch running wild in the Disney parks. I vaguely remember they had toilet paper all over Cinderella Castle. I looked for what ads they had now and it wasn’t nearly as good as that :/ just Stitch riding Tiana’s* (*Splash Mountain)
yeah i wasn’t running lilo & stitch like i was running hercules bc i had a crush on hades…. nothing really like that for me in lilo & stitch
the better disney retcon lore to me is the retheme of the california adventure car ride because of princess diana’s death. look this up. and the better 9/11 disney lore is that i went like as soon as it reopened after 9/11 because my mom was like omg it wont be crowded
i loved toilet paper castle. and i liked the ad campaign this year of stitch wearing cinderella’s shoe. and i like the animatronic. but ur right that they just didn’t go as hard
i love what they did with that ride lol. i rode that ride once after they did the retheming and it was legit one of the worst rides ever. I just remember cartoon Drew Carey with lifeless eyes smiling back at me
Basically anything after Mulan from Disney I was too old for and have no emotional attachment to in any way--those movies are for children and I grew up in the ADULT era of Aladdin and Hercules.
I will add that I do think "aww" when I see Stitch driving around the Century City AMC and it is due to it reminding me of my friendship with Fran and Clare
I adored stitch as a child and still do- I think the original film still holds up and has a lot of heart that 2D Disney had begun to lack in its day.
Having also lost my dog this year, I find the "stitch is literally a dog" interpretation relatable and important, now more than ever, but as a kid I had a different one: I didn't want a friend like stitch, I wanted to BE stitch. As a kid we are so powerless and so full of confusing, roiling emotion, and it would be so satisfying and fun if you could just be a little monster and act on them, chomp on the mean girl's head and claw and stomp and climb up the wall. I wanted to be stich soooo bad, and today I see myself most in the badness percentage chart, and it hits me very hard how deep the thought is that I am a demonic blue alien, inside
this is so interesting. one of the crazier parts of stitch working is that the alien dog and lilo the child are so similar, and it is appealing to be able to like destroy someone’s house and be forgiven. there’s something interesting too in the narrative place of the island and the house etc feeling so insular, like there are new rules put in badness for these two
I wish Clare had the portal gun from Stitch so that she could see her dogs whenever she wanted.
me too

omg we also went to Disney after 9/11 bc my parents were like “it’ll be dead”
I admire this pragmatism

i wish i could have seen this
Nani hot
in the list of Disney animated characters that make certain people go awogaa awogaa, Nani is definitely up there

My Stitch is E.T., I am a millennial.

100% correct — Disney Renaissance era or bust
